I intend to illustrate these pages with appropriate photographs but the basic information is there.
I am considering proposing a new flexible Lewis order which numbers valid British species in the currently approved taxonomic order. The Lewis number would designate the taxonomic position of a species, so in the event of a change in taxonomic position, or the insertion of a newly discovered species, many moths would change their Lewis number (while retaining their Bradley-Fletcher number). This would work well on a spreadsheet or database to ensure species were logged in the approved order but would clearly be problematic in published literature. It also requires a body akin to the British Ornithological Union to review what constitutes a valid British species and to approve the taxonomic ordering.
