49.190 Endothenia ustulana (Bugle Marble)
ws: 10-13mm (BTM), fw: 4-6mm (Sterling & Parsons); jun-Jul; bugle (Ajuga reptans); NS-B mainly S&SE England
ID: There are three small dark Endothenia species. E.nigricostana can be identified by its ochreous dorsal blotch. E.ustulana and E.pullana require genital examination to distinguish them.
Male genitalia: The uncus of E.ustulana has a shallowly indented posterior margin densely set with short spines; in E.pullana it is flat or slightly rounded and sparsely set with very short pegs. Similarly the saccular projection of E.ustulana is densely set with spines while that of E.pullana has much less conspicuous spines. The portion of the valva distal to the saccular projection is longer in E.pullana, such that the saccular projection is at ~¼ in E.ustulana and at ~⅕ in E.pullana. The only other Endothenia species with an indented uncus is E.marginana, which is readily distinguished on hindwing features, but it also differs in having the saccular projection at ~⅓ and in having cornuti in the aedeagus.
Female genitalia: In E.usutlana the sclerotisation posterior to the ostium is pointed and projects ventrally; in E.pullana the ostium is broader and more rounded. The signum of E.ustulana is similar to other Endothenia species; that of E.pullana is more diffuse.
