49.234 Epinotia abbreviana (Brown Elm Tortrix)
ws: 12-16mm; Jun-Jul; Elms (Ulmus spp); common at low altitude throughout GB
ID: Very variable in colour from pale ochreous through ferruginous to blackish-brown and in expression of the markings, notably the white antemedian fascia. According ti BTM the plumbeous strigulae are characteristic and are present through the full range of variation, however they appear not to be well expressed in examples with a clear white antemedian fascia. The antemedian fascia usually shows an acute angulation.
Female genitalia: Claw-like hairs on the ovipositor seem to be unique to this species (within the genus at least); ostium with a triangular plate, with a pointed apex on either side; short sclerotised patch in the ductus bursae; 2 long narrow signa.
