49.241 Epinotia crenana (Highland Tortrix)
ws:13-15mm (BTM), fw: 6&7mm (Sterling & Parsons); Aug-Apr, overwinters as adult; willows (Salix spp); RDB bogs, moorland and stream margins in N.Scotland eg Strathspey, Skye, Rannoch
ID: Very variable. The typical form has a sinuate longitudinal division between a white dorsal half and a blackish costal half, giving a diamond-back appearance with two incursions of the darker colour into the white area; these incursions may be blackish concolorous with the costal half colour or brownish and appear homologous with the partial antemedian and postmedian fascia delimiting a medain dorsal patch seen in some other Epinotia species; a variably expressed pretornal patch, separated from the postmedian incursion by a line of the dorsal colour. The dorsal area may be suffused grey obscuring the diamond-back pattern to a variable degree. The grey colour may be replaced with brown to a variable degree.
