As well as adding 2 new Stigmella species to the site this month I have done some extensive work in providing a provisional key to this difficult genus. I hope to test and better illustrate the key during the next few years as material becomes available.

Coleophora - male genitalia
In the process of my ongoing work on identification of Coleophoridae I have come to regard what is usually termed the uncus as a gnathos. This is based on the position of the anal tube. In Lepidopteran genitalia the anal tube enters the genital armature between the ventral and dorsal layers of the tegumen and emerges through the ventral layer near the apex of the tegumen - when an uncus is present the anal tube is therefore ventral to it, and when a  gnathos is present the anal tube emerges dorsal to the gnathos, between the gnathos and the apex of the tegumen. In Coleophora the anal tube emerges dorsal to what has traditionally been referred to as the uncus. Its structure - a median lobe set at the apex of a pair of side arms - is also closer to that of most gnathi (gnathoses?) than to most unci (uncuses?).

3 additional new species identified from off-season dissections, bring the total to 1627

I have also written a page on identification of Choristoneura species 

The warm spell at the end of July / beginning of August proved quite productive with 12 species added to the site. During this spell I obtained my first and then 6 subsequent Gypsy Moths; 2 seconds for Essex, and Harpella forficella which was new to Britain in 2011.
