Noctua tertia vs janthe vs janthina - FEMALES
|
Noctua tertia (WIlson's Yellow Underwing)
4 candidate specimens are shown here. All were taken on the Isles of Scilly, the first three in October 2022, the fourth in September 2023
All were selected from the pale reddish forewing colour and note that this is paler than the red form of N.janthe.
The distal edge of the black area of the forewing underside lacks finger projection in all (but so does one of the N.janthe specimens)
There is no convincing consistent difference in hindwing pattern or female genitalia between these specimens and the N.janthe specimens

Noctua janthe (Lesser Broad-bordered Yellow Underwing)
These 3 specimens were all taken in July the first two in Essex in 2013 and 2023, the third in Inverness-shire in 2023
The forewing colour ranges from reddish to blackish-purple.
The distal edge of the black area of the forewing underside shows finger projection in the first and third but not in the second specimen.
The second specimen shows a relatively long/narrow corpus bursae. ie the specimen which is aberrant for its forewing underside features shows female genital features generally described for N.janthe

Noctua janthina (Langmaid's Yellow Underwing)
This specimen is identified on the absence of finger projections on the forewing underside and the realtively short/broad corpus bursae.
Note that features of the underside of the forewing costa and pattern of the hindwing upperside do not seem to be useful in identifying females.
