35.040 Bryotropha terrella (Brown Moss-moth)
ws: 14.0-16.5mm; May-Aug; very common throughout Britain
ID: External Features - Labial palp S2 with conspicuous furrowed brush; ws 14-17mm > politella, desertella, terrella
Male Genitalia: B.politella lacks a sacculus; B.desertella has a very broad-based triangular gnathos; B.terrella has a highly characteristic S-shaped gnathos
Female Genitalia: 6 species of Bryotropha have the signum consisting of a pleated plate with two transverse ridges (in the remaining species it consists of a flat plate with strong spines at the corners). B.boreella/galbanella are excluded by S8 covered in microtrichia (but more reliably by labial palps S2 not having a furrowed brush and on size). B.politella/desertella have S8 deeply excavate from posterior margin ventrally to more than half the length of S8. B.terrella has a highly characteristic large triangular antrum and the posterior margin of S8 dorsally has a shallow invagination with a heavily sclerotised rim. B.domestica has a short tubular antrum and S8 dorsally is not invaginated but shows a small heavily sclerotised triangular scutulum.
