fw: 14-17mm (Waring & Townsend), ws: 32-39mm (MBGBI10); Aug-Oct; various herbaceous plants; common in England and Wales, local in S&C.Scotland.

ID: Forewing ground colour is typically reddish-brown. Strong black markings are: a basal line, 3 or 4 costal spots the subterminal of which is well-demarcated and strongest, kidney mark. In form rufa-pallida the forewing basal to an angular median cross-line is a paler reddish-brown. Agrochola lychnidis (Beaded Chestnut) has a weak, incomplete basal line, weaker browner costal spots the subterminal of which is a diffuse wedge, narrow, elongate oval and kidney marks, the oval usually being darker than the kidney.
