fw: 18-23mm (Waring & Townsend), ws: 40-56mm (MBGBI10); Aug-Oct, female overwinters as adult - May; hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium), wild angelica (Angelica sylvestris); local in moorland, marshes, upland grassland and coastal sand dunes in Scotland (esp N&NE) and N.England, in rough coastal grassland, cliffs and dune slacks in Wales and SW.England.
ID: Thorax and abdomen very hairy. Forewing rough-scaled; ground colour ochreous, variably suffused grey or brown; markings generally diffuse and obscure; oval and kidney marks pale; basal, antemedian and postmedian lines darker than ground colour; basal line obsolete towards dorsum; antemedian line sinuate, transverse; postmedian line arcs around the kidney mark and comes much closer to antemedian line at dorsum than at costa; subterminal line paler than ground colour, diffuse and variably bordered grey proximally.
