Suborder:Glossata Infraorder:Heteroneura Superfamily:Choreutoidea
Ref: MBGBI2
Taxonomic note: This family's placement has long been disputed. It has been subsumed within Glyphipterigidae, but is now universally accepted as a separate family. It has been placed in Superfamilies Yponomeutoidea, Tortricoidea and Sesioidea; and the scaled proboscis suggests affinities with Gelechioidea. Both the RES Checklist and Wikipedia now place it in its own subfamily Choreutoidea.
Diurnal; Rest with body held horizontal, off the substrate, wings flat and slightly diverging except in Tebenna where involute; Head smooth-scaled, Ocelli present; Labial palps porrect or ascending, length up to 2x eye diameter; S2 may have scale tufts; Maxillary palp 1-2-segmented, reduced; Proboscis well-developed, scaled at base; Antennae 1/2-2/3 forewing length, ciliate in male, ±simple in female, banded dark and white, no pecten; Forewing broad; Hindwing broader than forewing, cilia short; Legs short, stout, with sparse hair
Key: Cilia of hw shorter than breadth of hw; frenulum present; proboscis scaled, fully developed; mid & hindtibia with tufts of hair in middle and apically.
