63.018 Anania coronata (Elder Pearl)
ws: 22-26mm; Jun-Jul (Goater), May-Oct with peak Jun-Aug (Hants Moths); elder (Sambucus nigra); common in England and Wales
Synonym: Phlyctaenia coronata
Synonym: Phlyctaenia coronata
ID: very similar to A.stachydalis. In A.coronata the subterminal line expands towards the costa to form a blotch which is partially divided into 4 by 3 dark veins; in A.stachydalis the costal portion of the postmedian line is more completely divided by dark veins into (3) discrete and even sized spots. On comparison of images, but not mentioned in Goater (and on the basis of no personal experience with A.stachydalis), it looks like the (4th) spot at the costal end of the postmedian line in A.coronata is missing in A.stachydalis, so that in the latter the costa is completely fuscous-brown. The forewing apex is more blunt in A.stachydalis. In the hindwing of A.coronata there are three pale blotches proximal to the postmedian line - a large round one centrally placed in the distal half of the wing, another proximal and dorsal to it and the third costal to and separated from the large central blotch by a dark vein - this 3rd blotch is missing in A.stachydalis.
