The two subfamilies were until recently considered as separate families. The rationale for placing them in one family is a shared morphology of the tympanic organ.
Subfamily: Drepaninae have a falcate forewing apex, hence the term 'hook-tip', except Cilix glaucata (Chinese Character).
Subfamily: Thyatirinae look more like the Noctuidae.
