62.029 Phycita roborella (Oak Knot-horn)
ws: 24-29mm; Jul-Aug; oak (Quercus spp); common in oak woodland in England
ID: According to Goater: "easily recognised by the reddish admixture of the forewing, together with the broadly triangular dark patch before the first line". However, whilst usually reddish this species may be more orange-brown and is variable in the extent of both pinkish grey and dark fuscous irroration of the forewing; and the dark patch referred to seems to be neither consistently dark or triangular. And several other Phycitine species are predominantly reddish. Another feature I find useful is the humped appearance across the tegulae and thorax. The male antenna is strongly sinuate at its base with a prominent tuft of scales.
