49.332 Cydia coniferana (Pine Bark Moth)
ws: 10-14mm (BTM), fw: 4.5-7.0mm (Sterling & Parsons); May-Aug; Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris); NS-B pine woodland throughout GB
ID: Similar to C.cognatana (confined to Scottish Highlands) from which it cannot be reliably distinguished on external features. C.cosmophorana has solid white marks whereas the white markings of C.coniferana are each more or less divided by a brown line. C.conicolana lacks a medio-dorsal blotch.
Male genitalia: The only Cydia species with a distinct pointed projection from the saccular margin.
Female genitalia: BTM provides drawings of this and similar species and of those species mentioned above all but C.cognatana are shown at dissection group. C.coniferana is readily distinguished by the tripartite ventral plate of A8; the characteristically shaped plate with its paired lacunae posterior to the ostium and the exact pattern of sclerotisation of the posterior section of the ductus bursae.
