49.049 Cnephasia incertana (Light Grey Tortrix)
ws: 14-18mm; Jun-Jul; various herbaceous plants; common throughout GB
Cnephasia incertana §1 female
ID: Subbasal fascia angulate at middle and terminates abruptly before reaching dorsum.
Requires genital inspection for confident ID - in females this is straightforward and does not require much if any dissection.
Male genitalia: Sacculus short (~1/2 length of valva), with an abrupt curve at apex; gnathos long, broad and scobinate.
Female genitalia: The only Cnephasia species with a narrow ovipositor.
I tend to agree with Pierce and Metcalfe that the gnathos in the male and the ovipositor in the female are sufficiently distinct from other Cnephasia species to place incertana in a separate genus
