fw: 26-32mm; Jul-Sep; pedunculate oak (Quercus robur); RDB - resident in mature oak woodland in the New Forest, Hampshire and a few woodlands in S.Wiltshire, rare migrant to south coast from Devon to Kent.
ID: Most reliably distinguished from other Catocala species with a red hindwing by the shallow ‘W’ shape of the hindwing black postmedian fascia.
