12.034 Niditinea fuscella (Brown-dotted Nest Moth)
ws:11-17mm; May-Sep; common in England and Wales, less commmon in S.Scotland.
ID: Niditinea species are keyed in MBGBI2 as separable from Tinea species by having strong dark irroration at least in the apical area of the forewing and a strongly chequered costal fringe - however I have not been convinced by either of these features in images available on-line.
Niditinea fuscella looks very similar to the Tinea pellionella group and I suspect is best separated by genital examination.
Female Genitalia: Niditinea species have a pair of elongate signa in the bursa copulatrix, narrower and more elongate in N.fuscella, shorter and broadening more markedly towards the anterior end in N.striolella. Tinea species have small thorn-like signa each of which may or may not arise from a rounded scobinate patch (this varies between the species).
