fw: 28-37mm (Waring & Townsend), ws: 50-78mm (MBGBI9); Jul-Aug; various herbaceous plants; common throughout GB.
ID: Forewing markings vary considerably in detail of the pattern of brown markings on a white ground colour, hindwing red with large blue spots with a black and yellow ring around them. Antenna bipectinate in male, ciliate in female. Named variants are rare: form lutescens has a yellow hindwing ground colour; form fumosa has the white areas of the forewing suffused brown and a brown hindwing ground colour.
