73.283 Hadena confusa (Marbled Coronet)
fw: 14-16mm (Waring & Townsend), ws 33-39mm (MBGBI9); May-Jul, partially bivoltine in SE.England Aug; sea/bladder campion (Silene uniflora/vulgaris), rock sea-spurry (Spergularia rupicola); local on coastal calcareous soils throughout GB.
Hadena confusa (Marbled Coronet) §2 female
ID: Antenna fasciculate in male, shortly bipectinate in female. Forewing ground colour blackish; base white with black (basal and subbasal?) lines - this pattern 'continued' on the thorax; antemedian line represented by black edges crosses a white dorsal streak; kidney and oval white, partially outlined black; white blotch dorsal to the stigmata but not reaching dorsum; postmedian line white, scalloped, with black edges; white postmedian/pretornal dorsal V-shaped patch, pointed distally; subterminal line white jagged; whitish blotch at apex; several white costal spots; fringe grey chequered with whitish neural streaks. Hindwing fuscous. This typical form occurs in S,C&E.England with little variation; further W&N forms occur with ochreous suffusion of the white areas and olivaceous suffusion of the blackish areas.
The typical form is similar to H.compta (Varied Coronet) in which the white blotch dorsal to the stigmata is more extensive and reaches the dorsum, giving the impression of a more complete transverse median fascia; it also lacks the postmedian dorsal and apical white patches.
