20.011 Argyresthia (Argyresthia) brockeella (Gold W)
ws: 10-12mm; Jun-Jul; birch (Betula spp); alder (Alnus glutinosa); common throughout GB
ID: A - forewing unicolorous shining bronzy gold; thorax not white > A.brockeella/goedartella. These two are separated in MBGBI3 on basis that in A.brockeella the forewing is deep bronzy gold, while in A.goedartella it is yellowish gold. The plain winged specimen (§7) here looks more yellowish gold than deep bronzy gold but its genitalia appear identical to those of more typical A.brockeella shown here and at the dissection group website. I suspect that plain specimens cannot be reliably separated without genital dissection.
B - forewing not unicolorous, basal third not entirely white, white dorsal streak continuous to tornus, no white streak along fold > A.brockeella
C - forewing not unicolorous, basal third not entirely white, white on dorsum interrupted before 1/3, without 3 white transverse fasciae, with dark fascia near base; thorax and tegulae white, central (dark) fascia of forewing connected to terminal markings to form a W-shape > A brockeella. In A.goedartella the thorax and tegulae are metallic brassy and the central (dark) fascia is separated from the terminal (dark) markings.
