73.282 Hadena compta (Varied Coronet)
fw: 13-15mm; Jun-Jul, Sep; sweet william (Dianthus barbatus); (supposedly) common in the southern half of England
ID: Very similar to the typical form of H.confusa (Marbled Coronet). In H.compta the white blotch dorsal to the stigmata reaches the dorsum to give the appearance of a near-complete white median fascia; in H.confusa the white blotch does not reach the dorsum and there is much less of an impression of a median fascia. H.confusa has additional white blotches at the apex and on the dorsum distal to the postmedian line - these additional blotches are not seen in H.compta.
Male genitalia: In H.compta the juxta is rounded and lacks any midline process; in the aedeagus there is a strong curved cornutus which is longer than the adjacent cluster of spines. In H.compta the juxta is angular and has an anteriorly directed median process; in the aedeagus the cornutus is stubby, straight, conical and shorter than the adjacent cluster of spines.
