49.342 Cydia fagiglandana (Beech Mast Piercer)
ws: 13-19mm (BTM), fw 6-9mm (Sterling & Parsons); Jun-Jul; beech (Fagus sylvatica); common in beech woods in SE.England
ID: Forewing brown, speckled with white-tipped scales (irroration, farinose); costa strigulate, more markedly towards apex, with some of the pale strigulae extended as striae towards the subterminal region; variably marked medio-dorsal blotch which is variably strigulate; fasciate markings obscure; ocellus weakly marked. Hindwing dark brown; male has a patch of pale androconial scales at the wing base extending towards the dorsum. C.splendana is similar but has a well-marked ocellus and lacks the pale patch on the hindwing of the male.
