59.017 Argynnis (Argynnis) paphia (Silver-washed Fritillary)
ws: m69-76mm, f73-80mm; Jun-Aug; common dog-violet (Viola riviniana); woodland in S.England and Wales with scattered colonies in C&N.England.
ID: hindwing underside greenish and crossed by silvery bands. Male has sex brands - black streaks along the proximal section of veins in the dorsal half of the forewing upperside. Upperside very similar to the other two large fritillaries A.adippe (High Brown Fritillary) and A.aglaja (Dark Green Fritillary) both of white have prominent white spots on the hindwing underside. A.paphia form valezina occurs in a small proportion of females in colonies in SC.England - it has the orange colour replaced by silvery-green.
