58.006 Pieris brassicae (Large White)
ws: m58mm, f63mm; bivoltine Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep; various Brassicaceae; common throughout GB
ID: Both sexes have an extensive black forewing apical mark. In the male the forewing upperside is otherwise white; the female has two prominent black spots and a black dash along the middle of the dorsum. P.rapae (Small White) is smaller (ws 38-57mm) but otherwise similar - the male has a small black spot on both sides of the forewing. In P.brassicae in both sexes the apical black mark extends almost as far along the termen as it does along the costa, while in P.rapae it extends only a short distance along the termen.
