73.164 Apamea sublustris (Reddish Light Arches)
fw: 18-21mm (Waring & Townsend), ws; 42-48mm (MBGBI10); Jun-Jul; grasses (Poaceae); local in England & Wales, most frequent in SC & SE.England.
ID: Forewing ground colour ranges from whitish to reddish straw; markings obscure; a short brown oblique median dash from the costa towards and connected with a brown median streak; an indistinct narrow pale subterminal line with a 'W' towards the tornus and with distinct brown colouration on either side of (costal and dorsal to) the the 'W' mark, with some blackish in these concentrated areas; postmedian line represented by series of neural dots. Antenna: male - fasciculate-ciliate, female - finely ciliate.
A.lithoxylaea (Light Arches) has a similar pattern with a more straw, less reddish, ground colour; relatively narrower wings; more separated costal and median blotches; more diffuse brown blotches on the termen. A.lithoxylaea also has a dotted antemedian which seem to be obsolete in A.sublustris.
