35.116 Scrobipalpa obsoletella (Grey Orache Miner)
ws: 12-14mm; May-Sep; orache (Atriplex spp); NS-B on coastal saltmarsh in S.England and S.Wales, local further N
ID: Female genitalia - transition from ductus to corpus bursae clearly defined; signum clearly within the corpus bursae > S.oboletella or S.clintoni.
In the key in MBGBI4.2 these two are distinguished by the pattern of the longitudinal depressions of the ventral zone of A8 - tapered in S.obsoletella, broad in S.clintoni; and on features of the signum. The wording of the key is "signum long penetrating ¾ of corpus bursae" in S.clintoni and "signum penetrating <½ of corpus bursae" in S.obsoletella. The illustrations, however show the length of the signum to ~½ the diameter of the corpus bursae in S.clintoni and slightly <½ its diameter in S.obsoletella. The illustrations also show a difference in the base of the signum, being more extended anteriorly in S.obsoletella; and in the concave margin which is clearly crenulate/dentate in S.obsoletella and fairly smooth in S.clintoni - only the posterior border of the base being dentate. These features are confirmed by images at Moth Dissection for S.obsoletella, but there are no images for S.clintoni. In any event S.clintoni is confined to the west coast of Scotland.
