Depressaria |
Generic features: Ocelli present; Antenna 2/3 - 3/4 length of fw, simple; scape with pecten; Labial palps long, recurved, S2 slightly longer than S3; S2 heavily clothed with appressed scales dorsally and forward projected, tufted long scales ventrally, usually with a longitudinal ventral furrow; S3 smooth-scaled; Forewing elongate, termen rounded with apex not defined (squarely truncate in Agonopterix); V2&3 remote (stalked in Agonopterix), V7&8 stalked; Hindwing subtriangular, apex definable, termen and dorsum gently rounded to an expanded anal angle; V3&4 connate or on a short stalk
Depressaria species can be difficult to identify with confidence on external characters - genital dissection is often required.

Comment: It is not always clear that S3 of the labial palps has two dark bands in D.radiella; the gap between the two bands is often suffused fuscous on the outer aspect so that it appears blackish with a pale tip if only the outer aspect is viewed - the two bands are more apparent when the medial aspect is viewed. On the other hand the medial aspect of the labial palp of D.daucella can show some paleness making it difficult to say that it does not have 2 dark bands.
