49.224 Spilonota ocellana (Bud Moth)
ws: 12-17mm; Jun-Aug; polyphagous on a variety of trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants - especially Roasaceae; common throughout GB
ID: See Spilonota
Can be very similar to S.laricana. Specimens with an ochreous tinge to the ground colour should be S.ocellana. Otherwise, genital dissection is required to separate these two species, and at this stage I am not confident that the female genitalia of these two species can be distinguished.
Gypsonoma aceriana is also similar but lacks both the well-defined pre-tornal mark and the black ocellar dashes shown by S.ocellana.
Male genitalia: Cucullus long and ovoid (breadth:length ratio <=0.67); neck narrow; ventral margin of valva angular
