70.248 Lycia hirtaria (Brindled Beauty)
fw: 19-23mm; Mar-May; various broadleaved trees and shrubs; common in most of England, more local in Wales and Scotland
ID: Similar
in wing pattern and broad hairy thorax to males of Apocheima hispidaria (Small
Brindled Beauty), which is smaller (fw: 15-17mm) and to Phigalia pilosaria
(Pale Brindled Beauty), which is much the same size. P.pilosaria is generally
paler with weaker cross-lines and it flies earlier (Jan-Mar) than L.hirtaria,
though there is an overlap period in March. An all dark form nigra occurs rarely.
