73.238 Mniotype adusta (Dark Brocade)
fw 18-21mm; May-Aug; various woody and herbaceous plants; common throughout GB
ID: Forewing ground colour ranges from pale brown to blackish-brown and may show olive or reddish tones; a paradorsal black bar usually connects the antemedian and postmedian lines; black basal streak; distal margin of kidney mark white; subterminal white line with a distinct 'W' in the dorsal half. Where the paradorsal black bar is incomplete - may be confused with Mamestra brassicae (Cabbage Moth) which has an apical spine on each foretibia and chalky white edging to the kidney mark. Apamea exulis (Northern Arches / Exile) has broader antemedian and postmedian lines and lacks a distinct 'W' in the subterminal line. Apamea remissa (Dusky Brocade) has a more rounded forewing apex and is greyer. M.adusta has distinctive long 'eyelashes' which are not present in Apamea species.
