73.238 Mniotype adusta (Dark Brocade)
fw 18-21mm; May-Aug; various woody and herbaceous plants; common throughout GB
ID: Forewing ground colour ranges from pale brown to blackish-brown and may show olive or reddish tones; a paradorsal black bar usually connects the antemedian and postmedian lines; black basal streak; distal margin of kidney mark white; subterminal white line with a distinct 'W' in the dorsal half. Where the paradorsal black bar is incomplete - may be confused with Mamestra brassicae (Cabbage Moth) which has an apical spine on each foretibia and chalky white edging to the kidney mark. Apamea exulis (Northern Arches / Exile) has broader antemedian and postmedian lines and lacks a distinct 'W' in the subterminal line. Apamea remissa (Dusky Brocade) has a more rounded forewing apex and is greyer. M.adusta has distinctive long 'eyelashes' which are not present in Apamea species.

Notes: the spine at the apex of the harpe becomes more or less apparent with rotation of the valva
It is a moot point whether the pectinated sclerotisation at the apex of the aedeagus which becomes more apparent on eversion of the vesica is an extension of the tunica (as it seems to me) or part of the vesica (as per Pierce)
