73.052 Cucullia (Cucullia) umbratica (Shark)
fw: 22-26mm; Jun-Aug; sow-thistles (Sonchus spp), wild lettuces (Lactuca spp), hawk’s-beards (Crepis spp), hawkweeds (Hieracium spp); common in England and Wales, local in Scotland.
ID: Similar to C.chamomilae (Chamomile Shark) which averages smaller (fw: 19-23mm) and flies Apr-May. In C.chamomilae the black lines along the forewing veins extend into the terminal cilia, whereas in C.umbratica they don’t.
