ws: 13-16mm; Jun-Aug; moss; widespread in England and Wales and East coast of Scotland
ID: from male genitalia - abdominal S8 divided into separate dorsal and ventral plates; valvae symmetrical; gnathos simple; valvae tubular, tapering, without bristles; uncus not 4-lobed; base of valvae not swollen > Chionodes. Uncus with an apical 'tooth' > C.fumatella
C.distinctella usually has a generally brownish-fuscous colour compared with the blackish-fuscous colour of C.fumatella; however, both British species show much variation and genital determination is required.
