59.002 Lasiommata megera (Wall)
ws: 45-53mm; bivoltine May-Jun, Jul-Sep; various grasses (Poaceae); fairly common in coastal areas but generally declining in England, Wales and south Scotland.
ID: Somewhat similar to Pararge aegeria (Speckled Wood), which is brown with yellow spots on the upperside and lacks the orange colour of L.megera. The hindwing underside of L.megera is brown with discrete target-like subterminal spots each of which has a small white centre with a small black ring around it; in P.aegeria the hindwing underside is yellowish and the subterminal spots are more diffuse with a pale centre, a broad dusky surround and no black.
