fw: 15-17mm (Waring & Townsend), ws 30-40mm (MBGBI9); Mar-May in south, Apr-Jun in north; various broadleaved trees, woody and herbaceous plants; common throughout GB.
ID: Forewing ground colour usually greyish or reddish-brown but ranges from pale sandy to blackish; usually identified by the characteristic, but variable (and sometimes obscured), central black (or brown) mark extending around the dorsal margins of the oval mark and between the oval and kidney marks. Antennae bipectinate in male, shortly bipectinate in female.
