49.341 Cydia splendana (Marbled Piercer)
ws: 14-22mm; Jul-Aug; oak (Quercus spp), sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa); common throughout GB
ID: Both C.splendana and C.fagiglandana usually have a distinct angulate edge to the subbasal fascia and the whole forewing is irrorate with pale-tipped scales giving a farinose effect. C.splendana is distinguished by its conspicuous triangular pre-tornal black marking which extends around the conspicuous purplish ocellus. C.ulicetana is usually smaller with a weakly marked ocellus, lacking the purple colouration; it usually has a grey basal half of the forewing with little irroration and an obsolescent basal fascia, and an ochreous apical half with pale ochreous irroration.
