fw: 15-19mm (Waring & Townsend), ws: 35-42mm (MBGBI9); Apr-May; various broadleaved trees, woody and herbaceous plants; common in marshes and damp woodland in England and Wales, more local in Scotland.
ID: Ground colour variable from whitish through reddish, brown and grey to blackish, often irrorate ('powdered') with blackish scales giving a grainy texture; forewing apex fairly pointed; oval and kidney marks large, usually pale-outlined and dorsal half of kidney mark usually darker than costal half; subterminal line pale and complete, often dark-edged proximally; other crosslines variably expressed - antemedian and postmedian rows of black dots; terminal line of blackish dots or lunules.
