54.008 Zygaena filipendulae (Six-spot Burnet)
ws: 25-39mm, fw: 15-19mm; Jun-Aug - but I have also found it regularly on the Isles of Scilly in October; common bird's-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus); common throughout GB, though in Scotland restricted to coastal areas. ID: the only British Zygaena species with 6 red spots on the forewing. However, forms with some of the spots merged (especially 5+6) do occur, when it is most likely to be confused with Z.loti (Slender Scotch Burnet), but the latter has partly yellow legs, thinly scaled forewings and it only occurs on Mull and Ulva. |
