Small (ws 3-10mm)
Crown and frons with thick erect hairs, usually black, ferruginous or yellow
Antennal flagellum simple or shortly ciliate, 1/3 to 2/3 length of forewing, generally longer in male than female,
scape expanded into an eyecap concave on the underside, usually white or pale orange.
Ocelli absent. Proboscis absent. Maxillary palps 5-segmented, folded down. Labial palps 3-segmented, drooping
Collar of recumbent scales from back of head overlapping anterior thorax, usually black, white, orange or dull metallic.
Forewings moderately broad, pointed but may appear rounded due to long terminal cilia
Hindwings narrower than forewings, lanceolate, with long dorsal cilia (up to 4x width of wing)
Venation of both wings greatly reduced. Forewing veins branched (cf Opostegidae)
Frenulum present, single in male, multiple in female. Wing scales very large in proportion to size of moth
Glossy/metallic reflections from the wing scales which vary with angle of view make colours difficult to determine
Larvae are mostly leafminers.
Female with single genital opening.
