04.053 Stigmella incognitella (Grey Apple Dot)
ws: 5-6mm; bivoltine May, Aug; leaf mine in apple (Malus spp) Jun-Jul, Oct; locally common in England and Wales
Synonym: Stigmella pomella (MBGBI1)
Synonym: Stigmella pomella (MBGBI1)
ID: Group C3 - Forewing plain, head, reddish, collar pale. Keyed in MBGBI1 thus: forewing without pale markings; terminal cilia not white; head ferruginous, ochreous or yellow; forewing not tinged purplish, without an abrupt colour transition, not golden-brown; collar white to orange (not fuscous); antennae long (>1/2 fw length in male) > S.incognitella/perpygmaeella which require genital dissection for confident ID. I have not confirmed the identity of §1 but favour S.incognitella on the basis of quoted size range (ws 4-5mm for S.perpygmaeella), head colour (orange-yellow in S.incognitella, ferruginous in S.perpygmaeella) and lack of pale tips to the terminal cilia.
Male genitalia: S.incognitella/perpygmaeella are distinguished from other species in Group C3 by having a distinctly elongate genital capsule and a very long vinculum with a deep emargination and broad lateral angles. They are distinguished from each other on features of the gnathos: V-shaped with broad lateral arms in S.incognitella; U-shaped with moderate lateral arms in S.perpygmaeella.
