16.022 Cedestis subfasciella (Barred Needle-miner)
ws9-11mm (MBGBI 3), fw: 4.5-5.5mm (Sterling & Parsons); Mar-Jul (-Sep); pine (Pinus spp); common in pine woods throughout GB
ID: forewing brown to golden-brown, variably irrorate with fuscous-tipped whitish scales; a white fascia at 2/5 well-defined proximally but with a more diffuse distal border; more or less distinct tornal and distal costal white spots. Its less common congener C.gysseleniella is larger (ws 11-13, fw 5.5-6.5mm), with a whitish forewing with two broad golden-brown fasciae in the proximal half (subbasal and antemedian)- but these may be diffuse and the distal part of the wing may be golden-brown in continuity with the distal fascia, resulting in the appearance of a single white fascia and a very similar pattern to C.subfasciella. When the pattern is similar the species may be distinguished by the position of the white fascia, which is more proximal in C.gysseleniella - at ~1/4.
