ws18-22mm; May-Jun; various deciduous trees and shrubs; common in woodland and damp heaths throughout GB
ID: Forewing ground colour yellowish-white with a variable overlay of ferruginous which may be very extensive. Ferruginous markings are usually discernible as follows: 1 - a basal/subbasal fascia which is usually divided into a narrow costal streak and a broad dorsal section by an incursion of yellowish-white ground colour of variable completeness; this pattern 'continues' onto the tegulae and thorax, the latter having a ferruginous crest; and the incursion of ground colour is usually continuous with an antemedian costal blotch of ground colour. 2 a median fascia of variable completeness, but consistently well-marked at the dorsum and centrally, often with an incursion of ground colour between these two areas continuous with a tornal blotch of ground colour, and a postmedian costal blotch of ground colour often continues along the costa to prevent the median fascia reaching the costa. 3 - a terminal fascia which expands centrally towards the median fascia. Forewing cilia reddish. Hindwing upperside pale grey. Forewing underside dark grey; hindwing underside whitish.
