70.058 Costaconvexa polygrammata (Many-lined)
Rare migrant with <50 British records.
ID: Forewing and hindwing crossed by many fine lines; black central spot just distal to antemedian line; forewing antemedian and postmedian lines thickened with fuscous shading - in the female this shading extends the whole length of the crosslines, but in the male the antemedian shading extends from the dorsum to the central spot and the postmedian shading extends from midwing towards the costa; antemedian and median (but not postmedian) lines are angled proximally subcostally.
This species is extremely similar to the North American species C.centrostrigaria (Traveller), which is now established in the Canary Islands; Waring comments: "One form of this species is similar to Many-lined, but outer central cross-line is distinctly kinked in leading half" (which I interpret as 'postmedian line is distinctly kinked in costal half' - this text suggests, but does not make it entirely clear, that it is C.centrostrigaria that has this kink; in the associated plate (Plate 15 3rdEd) it is Many-lined that is drawn with the kink. In web images, however, it is C.centrostrigaria that shows the kink. Comparing with the plates in 1stEd it is clear that in rearranging the plates for the 3rd Ed the labels have been crossed.
