73.162 Apamea monoglypha (Dark Arches)
fw: 19-26mm (Waring & Townsend), ws 46-54mm (MBGBI10); Jun-Aug, occasionally bivoltine in south Sep-Nov; grasses (Poaceae); common throughout GB.
ID: Forewing ground colour ranges from pale greyish straw to blackish with a tendency for brown forms to predominate in the south and darker forms to be more frequent further north; oval and kidney marks large, concolorous with ground colour but outlined with an inner pale ring and an outer dark ring; subterminal line pale with a prominent ‘W’ near the tornus and with several black wedges extending proximally from it in its dorsal 2/3; black ‘V’ on either side of thorax (on the tegulae) and accentuated by the presence of medial and dorsal black basal streaks on the forewing; a narrow black paradorsal bar; antemedian and postmedian lines dentate/crenulate and the area between them may be a darker shade. Antenna: according to MBGBI10 - finely fasciculate in male and simple in female; but it appears to be setose in both sexes and ciliate in the male at least. In form infuscata the ground colour is dark but the markings remain visible; in form aethiops the markings are obscured by the the dense black ground colour.
