59.024 Vanessa cardui (Painted Lady)
ws: m58-70mm, f62-74mm; Apr-Oct; thistles (Cirsium spp / Carduus spp); common migrant with peak arrival May-Jun, these breed to give a second peak Jul- early Sep.
ID: pale orange ground colour, forewing apex black with white patches. The rare migrant V.virginiensis (American Painted Lady) has a more excavate forewing termen with blue terminal and subterminal spots at the apex; in the hindwing upperside where V.cardui has a postmedian row of black spots, V.virginiensis has two of these spots with a blue centre; where V.cardui shows two medium-sized black-ringed eye-spots with two smaller eye-spots between them in a postmedian row on the hindwing underside, V.virginiensis shows one large and one slightly smaller black-ringed eye-spots with a bold arcing cream cross-line proximal to them.
