52.008 Synathedon formicaeformis (Red-tipped Clearwing)
ws: 17-19mm (MBGBI2), fw: 9-11mm (Waring); May-Aug; willows (Salix spp); NS-B England
Comes to the FOR lure 11am to 6pm, peak around 1pm.
Three Synanthedon species have a red abdominal band. S.myopaeformis (Red-belted Clearwing) has the upper surface of the forewing entirely black.
S.culiciformis (Large Red-belted Clearwing) is larger (ws 22-25mm, fw 12-14mm) and has red suffusion at the forewing base (upperside) and lacks the bright red wing tips of S.formicaeformis.
