04.063 Stigmella roborella (Oak Dot)
ws: 5.0-6.5mm; bivoltine May-Jun, Aug-Sep; leaf-mines oak (Quercus robur) Jun-Jul, Oct-Nov; common throughout Britain
ID: Forewing without pale markings or sharp colour transition; terminal cilia not white; head ferruginous; collar white > 3 species
S.roborella, S.svenssoni and female S.ruficapitella. These require genital dissection to separate.
Male genitalia: images for all 3 species are available at Moth Dissection. In S.roborella the aedeagus contains more or less discrete apical and basal clusters of spicules, of similar lengths but with the basal cluster being broader and more densely packed than the apical cluster; the aedeagus of S.svenssoni has a similar arrangement of spiculate clusters except that the basal cluster is twice the length of the apical cluster; in S.ruficapitella the aedeagus is almost completely full of very densely packed spicules.
Female genitalia: Junction of bursa copulatrix twisted and conspicuously spiculate. (Not spiculate in S.svenssoni, not twisted in S.ruficapitella).
