ws: 18-20mm; Jun-Aug; marsh-mallow (Althaea officinalis); hollyhock (Alcea rosea); NS-B in grassland, saltmarsh & gardens in SE.England
Generic features: Labial palp long, slender, S2 thickened ventrally; antennal scape with pecten; Forewing without scale tufts, tornus rounded; hindwing broader than forewing
Male genitalia: valva subtriangular, uncus bipinnate; Female genitalia: signa - a pair of spiny plates
ID: Female genitalia: amongst British Gelechiids only this species and Platyedra subcinerea have the signa as a pair of spiny plates.
In P.malvella the spiny plates are larger and more spiny and the ostium is 'V' or 'U' shaped, while in P.subcinerea the ostium is more rounded.
