73.076 Helicoverpa armigera (Scarce Bordered Straw)
fw: 16-19mm; scarce migrant, all year, mostly Sep-Oct
Synonym: Heliothis armigera (MBGBI10)
Synonym: Heliothis armigera (MBGBI10)
ID: Very variable; forewing ground colour ranges from pale sandy to dark purplish-brown; markings (stigmata, subbasal line, narrow median fascia, broader subterminal fascia) range from distinct to obsolete; hindwing has a broad black border. H.peltigera (Bordered Straw) has a prominent dark kidney mark and 2 dark costal wedges, the proximal of which is fused with the kidney mark, and the distal of which is at the costal end of the subterminal fascia. These costal marks are not shown by H.armigera. H.nubigera (Eastern Bordered Straw) also shows the 2 costal marks and can be distinguished from H.peltigera by the distal margin of the subterminal fascia which is notched where the dark costal mark meets the rest of the subterminal fascia. (Waring and Townsend also mention that H.nubigera “has three small black dots on outer edge of forewing near tip”. I think this means on the termen near the apex, but these black dots cannot be seen on their illustration of this species).
