59.011 Pyronia tithonus britanniae (Gatekeeper)
ws: m37-43mm, f42-48mm; Jul-Aug; various grasses; common in England and Wales
Pyronia tythonus (Gatekeeper) §5 female
ID: Large patches of orange on both forewing and hindwing; pale band on hindwing underside with eye spots. Male has a broad dark sex brand on forewing. Female Maniola jurtina (Meadow Brown) is somewhat similar but usually larger (ws 42-60mm), lacks the orange patch on the hindwing upperside and the eye spots in the pale band on the hindwing underside.
