73.035 Simyra albovenosa (Reed Dagger)
fw: 16-20mm; bivoltine May-Jul, Aug-Sep; common reed (Phragmites australis); NS-B in wetland habitats in East Anglia, Essex and Kent.
ID: Resembles several ‘Wainscot’ species. Generally distinguishable in the male by its acutely angled pointed forewing apex and in both sexes by the pure white hindwing (upperside). Forewing apex is rounded in female. Forewing ground colour ranges from whitish ochreous to pale ochreous brown; dark brown basal streak of very variable length, from almost obsolete to almost reaching tornus; variable additional streaks centrally and subcostally in distal half of wing; no cross-lines; stigmata indeterminate; terminal interneural dots or dashes. Antenna with thick flagellum and white dorsal scaling, lamellate in male, sparsely ciliate in female.
In Mythimna species (the Hadenine wainscots) the eyes are hairy (glabrous in all Acronictinae); many of them have some greyish colour in the hindwing and those with a whitish hindwing have some white forewing streaking and/or a white spot
